FATIGUE EVALUATION OF STEEL DECKS IN FIXED OFFSHORE PLATFORMS

A procedure for evaluation of fatigue damage in steel superstructures of gravity offshore platforms is presented. The finite element method is used consistently for the establishment of the superstructure's stiffness as well as for the local stress distribution. The long-term stress range distribution is provided through the use of spectral analysis, and fatigue damage estimated by using the Palmgren-Miner's summation hypothesis. A structural analysis program based on the finite element method and a program for stochastic response analysis are developed for the above purpose. They are made to work together consistently, and may handle problems of considerable size. A typical North Sea platform of the CONDEEP design has been realistically modelled, and fatigue estimates computed with reasonable computer expenditures. The sensitivity of the results with respect to the modelling of the problem, as well as to the variation of important physical parameters, are demonstrated.
