FOREIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN. PART 1. DESCRIPTIONS. PART 2. COMPARISONS

UTALENDSKA NORMER FOER DIMENSIONERING AV VAEGARS DEVERBYGGNADER. DEL 1. BESKRIVNINGAR. DEL 2. JAEMFOERELSER

This investigation comprises pavement design methods from Norway, Denmark, UK, BRD, Switzerland and France. In some direct comparisons Sweden is included. A description of the methods is presented in part 1 (vti meddelande 103). The comparisons comprise partly descriptions of how the various countries consider the two main parameters in pavement design i.e. traffic load and subgrade properties, partly direct comparisons of design results when applying the methods. The comparisons show that there are considerable differences between the various design systems. This is the fact for both the design system and the pavement structure (material and layer thickness). The differences are explained partly by the fact that there are various demands on the standard and function of the roads and that the geological and climatological conditions differ. The Swedish pavement design method differs from the other methods mainly in two aspects: (1) when calculating the design traffic load (number of commercial vehciles/24 H), the traffic load is considered to be 10% of AADT irrespective of road category and magnitude of AADT, (2) the subgrade is evaluated without taking ground water table into consideration.
