WIND NOISE EXPOSURE OF MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

This study deals with the measurement of at-ear aerodynamic noise levels for various flow speeds in a wind tunnel, with a full-scale human head model. These results are compared to the total noise level obtained by live subjects in typical highway driving under similar conditions. The flow field at the test section has been analyzed. The flow turbulence and noise spectra are measured within the helmet boundary layer and at the ear. Effects of the pitch and yaw motion of the head and different visor shapes on at-ear noise have been studied. Finally, some statistical results on overall noise exposure of live subjects obtained during constant speed highway runs for 49 different motorcycle and rider combinations are presented.
