STABILITY ANALYSIS OF EMBANKMENTS AND SLOPES
In this paper the limit equilibrium method of stability analysis of embankments and slopes is considered in terms of the indeterminacy of the problem. At the same time, various ways of making assumptions to make the problem a determinate one are also considered. A method of stability analysis is proposed. It shows that the shear strength on internal shear surfaces has an effect on the computed factor of safety. This method is useful in analyzing actual slips in nature. In the example case it produces results compatible with those arising from the plasticity theory. (ASCE)
