RECYCLING IN THE CAR INDUSTRY
RECYCLING IM AUTOMOBILBAU
The availability of raw materials is one of many factors influencing the further development of the vehicle market. Uncertainties linked to this are illustrated by the author. At the present time 1.2 to 1.5 million car licenses per year are surrendered in West Germany. By the processing of car body scrap and similar steelplate scrap in shredders it is possible to ensure that the problem of salvaging iron and steel, which is environmentally helpful, may be regarded as solved. Shredders enable almost 100% of important metal or natural products to be salvaged. Batteries and old tyres are examples. The current exercise for the vehicle construction industry of the eighties is the synthesization and optimization of the manufacturing aims - safety, environmental acceptability, economy, availability of energy and fuel consumption as well as the availability of raw materials. More aluminium and more plastics for example are offered as a partial solution. In the case of plastics, however, there has not been up to now any satisfactory recycling technology available. In the car industry it is necessary to come to terms in the future with measures which do not burden the car-related recycling process but, if possible, improve upon the existing materials cycle.
