Functions and Applications of Geosythetics in Roadways
This article focuses on the use of geosynthetic products like geotextiles and geogrids for roadway projects. These geosynthetics are used to to fullfill specific functions in many roadway applications. For example, geosynthetics improve the performance of unpaved roads with soft subgrade soils and also minimize reflective cracking in asphalt overlays and improve performance of base aggregate layers, separation and drainage. This article focuses on two key factors: (1) different geosynthetic functions compare different properties; and (2) geosynthetic applications correspond to different roadway projects to achieve specific design purposes. While both reinforcement and stiffening functions result in mechanical improvements, the properties to fulfill them are very different.
