THE SURVEYING REQUIREMENTS FOR DEEP-DRAUGHT ROUTES

Less than a third of the world's continental shelves has been surveyed by echo-sounder, the rest--if surveyed at all--has been covered only by hand-lead and line. Examples are given of typical shelf surveys and of various ways of meeting modern requirements, including the use of multiple echo-sounders, side-scan sonars and sector scanning sonars. Reference is made to the effects on charting of the increasing amount of data available on individual wrecks and seabed obstructions as well as the use of traffic separation schemes. Order from NSFI as No. 18587.
