Data mining to assess the performance of foamed bitumen stabilised pavements on New Zealand state highways
Foamed Bitumen Stabilising (FBS) has been used for both rehabilitation and recycling existing pavements and modifying unbound aggregates for greenfield projects in New Zealand since 2004. Foamed bitumen pavement treatment sites on the New Zealand state highway network constructed during the past 10 years (over 200 individual treatment lengths in total, across 120 unique operations) were identified. The state highway Road Assessment and Maintenance Management (RAMM) database and High Speed Data (HSD) surveys were queried to obtain performance data on these sites. This analysis of the data shows that FBS sites are performing well with respect to roughness, rutting, deflection and cracking, and better than unbound granular pavements. There was a distinct difference in performance for sites constructed before 2008 and sites constructed after that. The improvement in performance is attributed to the introduction of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) B/5 Specification for In- Situ Stabilisation of Modified Pavement Layers in 2008. In summary, this study found that FBS pavements have generally performed well under New Zealand conditions, and those constructed after the introduction of the B/5 specification have performed even better.
