THE EVALUATION OF VISUAL INTRUSION IN TRANSPORT SITUATIONS

The paper describes an attempt to quantify certain aspects of the visual environment in terms of what is known as the characteristic of human vision. It is suggested that visual amenity is a function of the apparent size of the intruding artifact, its position (central of peripheral) in the visual field, and its 'hedonic' value, i.e. the degree of pleasure or displeasure which it causes in the demographic situation in which it is found. A technique based on these principles has been developed and has been applied in a number of real situations. The application of the method is briefly discussed. /Author/
