Comparative Analysis for Floating Car and Loop Detectors Data

With the increasing penetration of vehicles equipped with localization devices and an active transmission of positional information into the application processing centres, a question arises whether the current penetration of so called floating cars is sufficient for an adequate description of the traffic situation. This paper is devoted to the analysis of traffic data from southern part of Prague Ring Road, an expressway in the Czech Republic, assesses the characteristics obtained from floating car data and loop detectors. Although the identified penetration of vehicles is only about 2 percent in average, the quality of the fleet allows a reasonable estimate of the speed and intensity of whole traffic flow.
