Recommendations for application of the results of the Pavement LCA 2014 Symposium to Southern Africa

An international symposium was held in Davis, California in October 2014 on the subject of implementation of life cycle assessment for pavements, hosted by the University of California (Davis and Berkeley) and IFSTTAR (France), and sponsored by TRB, FHWA, ISAP and ISCP. The symposium was the third in a series that included a similar event in California in 2010 and a follow-up in Nantes, France in 2012. The symposium consisted of invited plenary presentations by experts presenting implementation issues for LCA for pavement, followed by breakout sessions to discuss the issues, and a summary of where there is consensus and where there are differences, and suggestions for the way forward. Participants came from academia (pavements, LCA), government (national, state, local) and industry (materials producers, contractors, national and state trade organizations). The paper summarizes the major points of the plenary presentations, questions posed to the breakout sessions, the results, and the suggested way forward, with a focus on pollution and energy issues facing southern Africa.
