Evaluating the Effectiveness of Traffic Network Management Systems for Congested Corridors: A Simulation Testbed and Analysis
Two main approaches are generally considered for developing decision support capabilities for real-time traffic network management systems: expert-based and optimization-based. Following the expert-based approach, traffic network management schemes are generated a priori based on off-line analysis of historical data that represents dominant observed congestion patterns. The optimization-based approach incorporates optimization techniques that are capable of constructing the most efficient traffic network management scheme on-line based on the prevailing network condition. The paper presents a simulation testbed for evaluating traffic network management systems considering these two approaches under different operational conditions. The testbed is calibrated using real-world traffic observations for the US75 Corridor in Dallas, Texas. The results show that the optimization-based approach is capable of providing more effective traffic management schemes compared to those generated by the expert-based approach.
