Bonding Strength of Non-Tracking Tack Coat
Non-tracking tacks are used to improve the pavement performance by avoiding the tracking problems associated with traditional tacks. Whereas a variety of new tack products have been manufactured while the specification and the evaluation of the non-tracking tacks have not been well-established as compared with the conventional tack coats. The objective of this research is to measure the rheological properties and the bonding potentials of different types of non- tracking tack materials. For this purpose, the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) frequency sweep test was performed on the tack residues for investigating their rheological properties. Also, a pneumatic adhesion tester was used to measure the pull-off strength for the interaction between the residues and different aggregate substrates. The direct shear test was conducted on field cores, which consist of a thin overlay and a bottom layer having different surface conditions and tack application rates, to determine the bonding shear strength at the interface. Three non- tracking tack coats and a traditional tack coat were investigated and the results of DSR frequency sweep test show that the non-tracking tack materials are stiffer than the traditional tack coat. The results from the pull-off testing demonstrated that the effect of tack type on the vertical bond strength was much more significant than that of substrate type. Furthermore, it was shown in the direct shear test of field samples that the non-tracking tacks have different degrees of sensitivity to the application rate and surface condition in terms of their bond strength.
