Friction of the AutoSock on Ice
The AutoSock is a newly developed tyre cover, aimed at increasing tyre-to-road friction when driving cars on icy or snowy roads. The AutoSockis tailored for situations where the duration of icy & snowy roads is normally short and does not justify special tyres. It is easy to mount and dismount, comfortable while driving, light weight and the space requirements of the sock is similar to an ordinary raincoat. Extensive research has brought the sock through a series of stages - from the first simple ones with short life-time and being advantageous just for specific conditions to a robust sock fitted for most conditions. The paper describes the essence of the research and testing of the AutoSock with emphasis on surface texture characterisation of the socks and laboratory tests of friction on ice.
