The Effect of Port and Container Terminal Characteristics on Terminal Performance

This article discusses the influence of port and terminal characteristics on container terminal performance. The article presents evidence that customer satisfaction, efficiency and terminal activity are performance factors that affect terminal success. In this article, performance is explained using a holistic perspective that involves multivariate factors. The article shows the five main characteristics that influence container terminal performance: regional and continental location, sea and land access, maritime shipping services, dynamism of port authorities, and terminal organization and logistics integration. Performance is measured in terms of efficiency, activity and customer satisfaction. Structural equation modelling confirmed the influence of port and terminal characteristics on container terminal performance. The article shows how the most successful container terminals in the region are in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean cost. These terminals are located near consumer and producer markets, they have good rail and road access, they are located near ports with deep-sea access, and they provide global services to shipping lines. Proximity to inland cargo and maritime routes and the ability to receive large large vessels with low cost per container are major factors when considering new ports. The results of a questionnaire that was sent to 12 container terminals in Portugal and Spain and the 122 responses are presented.
