Model Testing of a Single Anchor Moored Ship in the Wake of a Buoy in Level Ice and Pressure Ridges

A number of model-scale tests with a single anchored moored ship located in the wake of a moored icebreaking buoy has been executed in the Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt GmbH (HSVA) ice tank in Hamburg. The modelled ship had a conventional icebreaking bow and a length between perpendiculars of 235 m. The testing was performed at a scale of 1:36. The purpose of the tests was to study the feasibility of the concept in level ice and pressure ridges. The present paper describes the testing and results from the different tests. The testing in ridges showed that the concept (as tested) cannot be recommended for ice conditions where ridges exceed the ice-breaking capacity of the buoy unless disconnection can be done.
