Sea Ice Thickness and Snow Depth Distribution of the Summer Land-Fast Ice in Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica

The authors investigated the distributions of ice thickness and snow depth of the summer land-fast ice in Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica. The ship-based electro-magnetic induction method as well as the video method provided the total (ice plus snow) thickness and snow depth, respectively, in the austral summer from 2000 to 2001. It was found that the spatial distributions of total thickness and snow depth showed good correlation with each other. Profiles of total thickness and snow depth had an abrupt change, which reflected the breakup of the land-fast ice occurred in austral winter, 2000. In regard to the temporal variability in the austral summer of about two months, the decrease of total thickness was mostly due to the decrease of snow depth. Present results suggested that snow cover and breakup were two of the most influential factors for the growth and decay of the land-fast ice in Lützow-Holm Bay.
