ARM 7 Based Controller Area Network for Accident Avoidance in Automobiles
This paper describes a system which uses sensors to measure various parameters of the car like speed, distance from the other car, presence of alcohol in car and accidental change of lane. The system sends a warning signal to the driver if any of the parameters go out of range so that accidents can be avoided. The paper implements an in-vehicle Controller Area Network (CAN) architecture based on the requirements of a modern vehicle. In order to reduce point to point wiring harness in vehicle automation, CAN is a means of data communication within the vehicle environment. The benefits of a CAN bus based network over traditional point to point schemes offer increased flexibility and expandability for future technological innovations. If an accident occurs in any remote area, a Short Message Service (SMS) is immediately sent using Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) via a bump sensor. A good example of how the system works is when a driver is about to change lanes, and there is a car in his blind spot, the sensors detect the car in the blind spot and inform the driver before he starts turning, which ultimately prevents a serious accident.
