Crash fatality and vehicle incompatibility in collisions between cars and light trucks or vans

This study examines collisions between light trucks or vans (LTVs) and cars, examining the likelihood of fatality for occupants of each vehicle type. A case-control study of crashes involving two-passenger vehicles (cars or LTVs) between 1990 and 2008 is conducted. The authors seek to determine the risk of vehicle occupant fatalities when colliding with an LTV versus colliding with a car, as well as the risk of LTV occupants dying after collision with a car. The results show a lower risk of death for LTV occupants than car occupants and a higher risk of death for vehicle occupants who collided with LTVs versus colliding with cars. They conclude that LTVs offer more protection to their occupants but are associated with higher risk of death for occupants of other vehicles when involved in crashes.
