Vehicle Detection and Dimension Measurement with Laser Scan Sensor

In the field of ITS, aimed to improve road traffic environment such as smooth traffic flow and enhancement of amenity thanks to relief of traffic congestion, such techniques as electronic toll collection system / traffic management are required to be developed. As common technique effective for these requirements, such system as vehicle detection / vehicle classification that detects traveling vehicles by means of camera or sensor and determines vehicle type by extracting information related to such information as vehicle configuration or parameters (height, width, length) are available to use. The authors have come up with a system that aims to detect vehicles and to measure parameters, which is available for both single lane / multi lane free traffic flow by means of function of the laser scan sensors, by applying and developing technology cultivated in toll collection engineering such as Singapore ERP system and Japanese Toll Collection System etc. The applicable system was evaluated at in-house laboratory and could successfully obtained stable high measurement accuracy for all types of vehicle. The authors are determined to deploy this system to various applications in ITS down the road.
