Analysis of Congestion Reduction Effect of Information Provided VICS Using Traffic Simulation

VICS is a telecommunications system which transmits real-time traffic information, such as congestion and traffic regulation, and displays them on onboard equipment, such as car navigation, by text and/or graphical illustration. Started only in Tokyo metropolitan area from 1996, the VICS has been expanding the service available all over Japan. Recently, VICS Center is discussing the effects of new VICS service, i.e. next-generation VICS service, which expands the cover area of the service by using probe car data. For this purpose, this study attempts to evaluate the congestion reduction effect of the new VICS service by using traffic simulation model. As a result, it turned out that the next-generation VICS service enables bigger traffic congestion reduction than the existing VICS service.
