Prediction of Travel Time Considering Turning Behavior at Intersections

Automotive navigation system calculates the time of arrival at the destination based on the travel times included in traffic information. Since this travel times are calculated without considering vehicle behavior such as left turn, going straight, and right turn at intersections, the time of arrival sometimes could not be predicted correctly when the route included intersections where travel time of vehicle behavior differ significantly. Therefore, the authors calculate travel times of vehicle behavior respectively from probe data. When comparing the predicted travel time and the actual travel time, they found that the travel time could be predicted with high accuracy. By utilizing this study, automotive navigation system can provide the driver with a route with less congestions and more accurate time of arrival. The authors can say that the automotive navigation system can provide each driver with detailed traffic information with data of travel time in each turning behavior.
