Time Synchronization of Plural Roadside Units in 700 MHz Band Intelligent Transport Systems

The intelligent transport systems (ITS) using 700 MHz band in Japan accommodates both Roadside-to-Vehicle Communications (RVC) and Inter-Vehicle Communications (IVC) while it is operated with a single channel, it assigns different time periods for transmissions by roadside unit (RSU) and on-board equipment (OBE) respectively. A RSU sends the transmission timestamp and own transmission period (RSU slot) to surrounding OBEs, so each RSU needs to maintain time synchronization accurately. In this paper, the authors investigate how the synchronization accuracy of plural RSUs may get worse from a practical point of view. The problems caused by each synchronous method are shown, and the measures against them are verified through simulation and field test.
