Low-energy and environment-friendly solutions for road maintenance

The paper presents two techniques answering the specific needs of road maintenance works while offering a high added value in terms of sustainable development. A first product slate, designed for low traffic flexible roads, incorporates bituminous mixtures based on bitumen fluxed with a vegetable oil. Free of emissions into the environment, those are extremely flexible in use (laying of a new wearing course, re-profiling, small repairs, deferred use) and can be manufactured and laid at quite low temperatures. Constant progress in the formulation of emulsions as well as in the fine tuning of the mixing process and improvement of workability have also given birth to a new generation of emulsion based bituminous mixtures for wearing courses. The results obtained after 2 years of monitoring of several trial sections on low traffic roads are presented and discussed. Those allow us to be optimistic on the future development of the technique.
