New data, new applications: using transportation system data for regional monitoring

The availability of detailed, historical transportation system data makes it possible to monitor and explain regional phenomena in new ways. We are developing an historical archive from real-time traffic data in the Los Angeles region. It includes geo-spatial freeway, arterial and transit operations data. The data allow us to sample across time, space and modes. We develop a method for monitoring regional, multi-modal transportation system performance. Using attributes of each mode (state highway, arterial, fixed-route transit), we generate a representative database. The database allows for performance analysis at any scale (from segment to entire system) and across any time interval. The archived real-time data are used to generate basic performance measures. We illustrate with an application using the highway system.
