Smart composite structures for transportation infrastructures and vehicles

In the field of transport, there is an industrial demand in structural materials that are lighter, stronger and having self-diagnostic capabilities. The scope is to make them last longer with minimum maintenance. So, strong attention is given nowadays to smart composites with embedded sensors. Many types of sensors can be embedded within composites, so that the behavior of composite structures under various stress solicitations can be finely monitored. The first part of this work is a summary of some results obtained when using optical fibers as sensors. Stepping back to the nano level, carbon nanotubes are ideal fillers for the mechanical reinforcement of polymeric matrices. Some promising results that show the beneficial effect of reinforcing thermosetting polymers with CNTs are presented, thus opening new opportunities for bi-reinforced polymers in some advanced industrial fields such as transportation.
