Establishing a Comprehensive Transport Research Information Management and Exchange System – The HERMES Project

This paper details the two main activities of the HERMES project, supported by the European Commission’s FP7 Programme, which was created to address the needs for a closer international collaboration on transport research. The first was the development of an “access portal” to international databases dedicated to transport research, to provide the research community with easy access to information on current and past research activities worldwide and describes the challenges this development work encountered. The second describes the findings of an extensive consultation with researchers to identify the route to developing an international transport research community the challenges, legal, cultural, financial etc., to achieving this goal and a list of actions to be taken for the way forward. One of the actions identified through this consultation circumvents many obstacles, yet requires little action on behalf of policy makers, national governments and funding authorities and could be the first step towards achieving the goals of closer international collaboration.
