The Assessment of Social Benefits of Two Marche Region of Italy Multimodal Traveller Information Systems

The objective of the paper is to provide the assessment of the social benefits of two on-line passenger traveller information systems operating in the Marche region of Italy. The two applications, available at http://www.mobilitami.it/, and http://orari.trasporti.marche.it/, allow the users to choose among a range of public transport options (bus, regional and national trains, in isolation or in combination) for reaching destinations at regional level. The methodology to assess the social benefits relies on the availability of one year (2012) of realworld access to the on-line multimodal traveller information systems. Data availability and analysis, under specific assumptions, allow the assessment of social benefits in terms of reduction of external costs of transport in the region (climate change, air pollution, noise and accidents), the improvement of accessibility to regional remote areas and the facilitation of mobility under adverse environmental conditions (e.g. bad weather).
