Understanding Older Drivers: An Examination of Medical Conditions, Medication Use, and Travel Behavior

This first phase of an Urban Institute study funded by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety focuses on creating baseline information on older driver behavior, medication use, and medical conditions from two large national data bases: the 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and the 2011 National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). This report has six major sections. First, the authors briefly describe what is known about 1) the impacts of medication use, and medical problems, on the crash risks of older drivers, and 2) trends in the automobility and travel behavior of older people. Next the research approach and the two major data sources are described. Subsequent sections describe baseline data from the NHATS and NHTS on medication use and medical conditions among older drivers, medication use and travel behavior and self-regulation, and the complex relationship between income and travel behavior among those using medications or with a medical condition. The final major section summarizes and assesses the main findings.
