City shaping: Auckland CBD rail link
The Auckland Central Business District (CBD) is used by more than quarter of a million people a day. The limitations on capacity of the existing public transport infrastructure on both the rail and bus networks, is forecast to lead to constraint on the CBD’s growth in the near future. Britomart, the main downtown rail and bus station, is expected to reach rail capacity by around 2020. It is clear that a major public transport infrastructure initiative is required. Construction of an underground railway from Britomart beneath the CBD to the North Auckland Line (NAL) around the Mt Eden area is supported by the Auckland CBD Rail Link Study (the Study) as the preferred option which most effectively addresses this transport problem.
