Examining the association between age-related macular degeneration and motor vehicle collision involvement: a retrospective cohort study

In this paper, the authors examine the association between the presence and severity of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and motor vehicle collision (MVC) risk in older drivers. A retrospective cohort study pooling samples from four previous studies was used, and state agency accident reports provided the basis for the MVC data. The associations between the MVC rate for older drivers with early, intermediate or advanced AMD was compared with those in normal eye health. Results found the MVC rate to be significantly lower for only those with intermediate AMD, suggesting that older drivers with AMD have a reduced risk of collision involvement. The authors recommend further research to investigate whether self-regulatory driving practices underlies the reduced risk.
