STRENGTH VARIATION ALONG FAILURE SURFACES IN CLAY

CONSIDERATION OF THE CHANGES IN STRESS REQUIRED TO CAUSE FAILURE ON VARIOUS PLANES SHOW THAT THE VARIATION OF UNDRAINED STRENGTH WITH ORIENTATION OF THE FAILURE PLANE DETERMINED USING COMPRESSION TEST SAMPLES TRIMMED IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE IN-SITU VARIATION OF UNDRAINED STRENGTH. TWO TYPES OF CONSOLIDATED-UNDRAINED PLANE STRAIN COMPRESSION TESTS WERE USED TO SIMULATE IN-SITU FAILURE OF UNDISTURBED SATURATED CLAY AT TWO POINTS IN-SITU WHERE THE FAILURE PLANE HAS DIFFERENT ORIENTATIONS. THESE TESTS SHOW THAT DEPENDING ON THE ORIENTATION OF THE FAILURE PLANE, THE UNDRAINED STRENGTH MAY DIFFER BY ABOUT 30%, THE VALUE OF THE STRENGTH PARAMETER MAY DIFFER BY 10%, THE VALUE OF THE PORE PRESSURE PARAMETER MAY DIFFER BY 40%, AND THE STRAIN REQUIRED TO REACH FAILURE MAY DIFFER BY A FACTOR OF 3. THE VARIATION OF UNDRAINED STRENGTH DETERMINED BY MEANS OF THESE PLANE STRAIN TESTS AGREES WELL WITH THE FORM OF THE VARIATION DETERMINED BY TESTING UNDISTURBED SAMPLES TRIMMED IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS. /ASCE/
