Solution for eCall Implementation at National Level within the HeERO Project – Romania Case Study

The in-vehicle eCall is an emergency call generated either manually by vehicle occupants or automatically via activation of in-vehicle sensors. When implemented at European level, eCall will save hundreds of lives by shortening the response time of the emergency services. During 2011 eCall was implemented in Romania, as part of the HeERO project. After analysing the number of road accidents at national level and the current E112 system architecture, a centralized approach was chosen the implementation of eCall in Romania. The next step was drafting the system architecture and the technical specifications for the needed upgrades. Romania is one of the 9 countries that participate in the Harmonized eCall European Pilot (HeERO), a pilot project that aims to prepare, carry-out and coordinate eCall predeployment pilots at European level. The eCall system implemented in Romania deals with all the components of the service chain and has an interface with the EUCARIS database and one with the Traffic Management Centre. For all the tests, in-vehicle systems produced by a national company are used.
