City of Mississauga's Downtown Urbanization

Launched in 2007, the City of Mississauga's Strategic Plan-Our Future Mississauga has brought a new vision for Mississauga, focusing on a transit-oriented city with a multi-modal transportation system and complete neighbourhoods. The City's Downtown21 Master Plan provides the framework for the continued transformation of Mississauga's downtown from a suburban centre to a vibrant urban core. A key component of this framework is a transportation system which accommodates all modes and is an integrated element of land use design. This paper will illustrate how the City of Mississauga has designed components of its transportation network to contribute to the downtown vision. It will present how the application of a roundabout and 'flush' street have helped the City to transition activity from the adjacent regional shopping centre to the pedestrian oriented urban City Centre district. The paper will further discuss how suburban 'Engineering and Design Standards' can be reconsidered in an urban context and how public involvement can assist in establishing a vision and achieving the goals for urbanization.
