The English element in the development of Croatian maritime terminology

Engleski jezicni elementi u razvitku hrvatskoga po morskog nazivlja

One of the major features in the historical development of maritime Croatian, and Croatian maritime terminology in particular, has been lexical borrowing. The Italian element had influenced maritime Croatian for the most part of its existence, i.e. since the 8th century until World War II. The development of maritime Croatian in more recent history has been dominated by the English element, with the first instances of English influence being recorded as early as 1852. The study of the English element in Croatian maritime terminology is dealt with in this paper, with particular reference to phonological, morphological and semantic change. In view of the typology of the nature of language contacts between English and Croatian, introduction of the English element is also studied.
