Distracted driving: mobile phone use while driving in three Mexican cities

In this study, the authors investigated the prevalence of mobile phone talking and texting among drivers in three Mexico cities: Guadalajara-Zapopan, León and Cuernavaca. Roadside observations from randomly selected automobile drivers in 2011-2012 were conducted. In addition to an evaluation of mobile phone use while driving (MPUWD), associated demographic and environmental factors were also assessed. Results showed an overall prevalence of MPUWD of 10.78%, with the highest incidence in Guadalajara-Zapopan (13.93%, 95% CI 12.87 to 15.05) and the lowest in Cuernavaca (7.42%, 95% CI 6.29 to 8.67). MPUWD was also found to be associated with weekday solo drives along major roads in non-taxi cars. The authors suggest the importance of studying the risk of mobile phone use and of addressing the problem in Mexico with specific preventive interventions.
