Innovative Coating Systems for Steel Bridges: A Review of Developments
This article summarizes some key advances in bridge coating systems over the past 15 years. Conventional three-coat systems are described, along with advances in topcoat technology and two-coat technology for rapid recoating. The advances include polyaspartic-polyurethane topcoats, polysiloxane topcoats, and a high-ratio calcium sulfonate alkyd system. The authors discuss laboratory results for both conventional and newer systems and present three case studies that illustrate the performance of polyaspartic and polysiloxane systems.
