Crashes Involving Cell Phones: Challenges of Collecting and Reporting Reliable Crash Data
This report looks at the under-reporting of cell phone use in accident data. 180 fatal accidents involving cell phone usage from 2009 to 2011 were analyzed and compared with the corresponding National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data to establish the rate of under-reporting. The report also examines where the data may be lost in the process of reporting accidents and the importance of accurate reporting.
