Improving the methods used to provide access to and from trains for wheelchair users

Improving access to rail for wheelchair users provides social and economic benefits. Rail offers wheelchair users a potentially accessible form of travel, but boarding and alighting from trains present challenges to wheelchair users and rail staff alike. This report focuses on wheelchair users who have no other disabilities and who are capable of transporting themselves from A to B on the railway, providing access to and egress from trains and stations are provided. Specific objectives of the research were to explore the current methods used to help wheelchair users board and alight from trains, to identify the hazards associated with this task, and to recommend how to improve the methods used to assist wheelchair users with boarding and alighting from trains. It was found that the vast majority of wheelchair users board and alight from trains via a portable manual boarding ramp. The focus of this research has therefore been the assistance service that is provided to wheelchair users when boarding and alighting from trains using a folding manual boarding ramp.
