Mechanical Strength of Hydraulic Cement with Addition of 2 & 4% of Sugar Cane Bagasse
This research attempts to find construction materials that result in an alternative to the traditional ones. The use of natural fibers, such as sugar cane bagasse, could be a real possibility to replacing crushed aggregates in the concrete production, since it is considered as scraps in the sugar industry. It also represents a continuous renewable material source. The sugar cane bagasse was used just as it was provided by the sugar refinery. And the results were compared with bagasse treated with paraffin due to the effect of the cement alkaline condition. The investigation was carried out with different percentages of bagasse (0%, 2%, and 4%) partially replacing the crushed aggregates by volume. A difference of 1% was achieved in the compressive strength of the concrete for the bagasse replacing 4% the crushed aggregates. Hence the bagasse could decrease in a percentage the quantity of crushed aggregates, without significantly affecting the compressive strength of the concrete.
