The temporary bailey bridge over the derwent river at Hobart, Tasmania
Following the collision of the vessel lake illawarra with the tasman bridge, a vital communication link of the Hobart metropolitan area was severed. With the exception of a 50 km diversion over bridgewater bridge, largely on narrow, unsealed roads, and a small vehicular ferry at risdon, 6 km upstream from the city, the tasman bridge was the sole vehicular crossing link for more than 50 000 people living in the dormitory municipalities on the eastern shore of the derwent river. This paper describes briefly the traffic situation before construction of the temporary bailey bridge and that subsequent to its completion. The design and construction of the bridge are commented upon with special reference to the areas which were relatively unusual in this type of project. (A)
