A review of the AS 1480-1974 span to effective depth ratios for control of deflections in reinforced concrete members
The AS 1480-1974 requirements for the use of span: depth ratios for controlling deflections in reinforced concrete members are reviewed in the light of recent criticism. It is shown that the basis of the span : depth ratios is sound but the limits of deflection implicit in the span : depth ratios are not the same as the permissible limits of deflection recommended by the code. A simple modification is proposed so that members designed using the span : depth ratios are unlikely to have deflections which exceed the prescribed deflection limits. (A)
