Application of fracture mechanics principles to analyse cracking in asphalt concrete

This paper describes the development of a procedure which allows the crack growth resistance of asphalt mixes to be determined by means of simple tests which can be run in any road materials testing laboratory. The method is based on Schapery's theory for crack growth in visco-elastic materials. The repeated load tensile test program is described and it is shown how the parameters characterising crack growth are derived from the test results. The main equations from Schapery's theory are presented which clearly indicate that a simplified procedure is possible. The development of such a procedure and some practical applications are described.
