Current vehicle design rules - their incompatibility with legislation and scientific laws
The current rules for the structural design of vehicles differ little from country to country. The application of some elementary laws of physics shows that mostly the rules do not provide adequate protection for vehicle occupants sometimes in even minor collisions. Also in Australia many rules which should be included are absent and one is unintelligible. The paper discusses this present situation and the legal problems it raises when occupants are injured in road accidents involving vehicles which satisfy the rules, but, as simple engineering analysis shows, application of these rules can result in unsafe vehicles.
