MEASUREMENT OF IN-SITU STRESS IN ROCK
MOST OF THE SOLUTIONS SUGGESTED FOR THE PROBLEM OF IN-SITU STRESS MEASUREMENT IN ROCK MASSES HAVE BEEN LIMITED IN APPLICATION WITH REGARD TO THE SITE AT WHICH THE MEASUREMENT CAN BE CARRIED OUT AND/OR THE ROCK MATERIAL IN WHICH THE METHOD CAN BE USED. METHODS EMPLOYING THE STRESS RELIEF TECHNIQUE HAVE THE ADVANTAGES OF ACCURACY, ADAPTABILITY, AND RELATIVELY LOW COST. THE USE OF PORTABLE SIMULATION APPARATUS ON SITE MINIMIZES THE CHANGES WHICH OCCUR WHEN SAMPLES MUST BE TRANSPORTED TO THE LABORATORY.
