Bicycle helmet retention systems

The aims of a bicycle helmet retention system are to maintain the helmet shell in a suitable equilibrium position and to offer maximum resistance to movement. Bicycle helmets are subject to rotation in normal use, especially in the forward direction, due to vibrations and road shocks overcoming frictional adherence to the head. Therefore, sound design principles (involving only leverage generated by the straps) must be employed. This paper describes and analyses suitable design principles and optimisation procedures for bicycle safety helmet retention systems.
