Concrete roads for Australia - the first hundred years

This paper examines the early use of concrete in roads, highlighting the reasons for its use, type of construction and the reasons for its decline in popularity from the early 50's to late 70's. Identification of the small in number, yet successful projects undertaken during what may loosely be termed the asphalt years, with comments on that pavement choice leads into the resurgence of current interest in concrete as a viable road pavement. The various milestones in the history of concrete roads in this country are also identified. The paper concludes with comments on the ready mixed concrete industry's approach to securing an even greater share of this market (a).
