Risk, reliability and limit state design: a 1985 overview of developments

The background to the development of interest in probabilistically based design is briefly reviewed. The place of limit state design as a vehicle for the introduction of probabilistic concepts is described and the present status of the programme of conversion of structural codes into limit state is reviewed (a).
