Utilization of fly ash in Australia

Over 2.8 Million tonnes of fly ash is generated per year at the major power stations in Australia. At present, only about 300 000 tonnes per annum are being used, mainly as a replacement for cement and aggregate in pre mixed concrete. Small quantities are also used for the manufacture of a blend of fly ash and portland cement, and as a mineral filler in asphalt. Research and development work with the aim of increasing the quantity of fly ash used in concrete is being carried out by some of the major cement, pre mixed concrete and concrete block producing companies. The CSIRO division of building research is studying the effects of fly ash on creep and related physical properties of concrete. Furthermore, the division is examining the feasibility of utilizing fly ash for producing building materials, namely lightweight synthetic aggregates, aerated (foamed) concrete, bricks and blocks and for making roads and pavements. It has been found that many of the Australian ashes derived from bituminous and subbituminous coals are strongly pozzolanic and are quite suitable for the applications mentioned above (a).
