DESIGN OF THE MAIN FOUNDATIONS OF THE PORT MANN BRIDGE

THE PRIMARY TOPIC OF CONSIDERATION IS THE DESIGN OF THE DEEP FOUNDATIONS OF THE PORT MANN BRIDGE. THE SUBSIDIARY FOUNDATIONS ARE MENTIONED BRIEFLY. DISCUSSED ARE DESIGNS CONSIDERED, PILE LOADS AND TESTS, AND SCOUR PROBLEMS. THE PILE CAP IS SUPPORTED BY STEEL PIPES (24 IN. O.D.) COATED WITH ASPHALT AND PLACED IN PRE-BORED HOLES AND THEN DRIVEN INTO THE BEARING STRATA, A LAYER OF TILL-LIKE MATERIAL, 200 FEET BELOW GROUND LEVEL. THE BOTTOM SECTION, 40 FT. LONG, HAS A 1/2 IN. WALL THICKNESS AND IS FITTED WITH A CAST-STEEL POINT. THE WALL THICKNESS OF THE UPPER SECTIONS IS 3/8 IN. THE PILES WERE DRIVEN BY DROPPING AN 8 TON HAMMER INSIDE THE PILE, HITTING IT NEAR THE POINT. THE BOTTOM 15 FT. OF THE PILE IS FILLEDWITH DRY MIX CONCRETE. THE PILES WERE TO BE DRIVEN TO A SET OF HALF AN INCH FOR 10 CONSECUTIVE BLOWS OF 30,000 FT-LB NET ENERGY. THE WORKING LOAD OF 150 TONS/ PILE, ASSUMED IN THE DESIGN, WAS CHECKED BY LOADING TESTS ON SOME OF THE PILES.
